Indigenous students given a taste of uni

About 120 Indigenous Year 10 students from eight schools in Darwin are
visiting Charles Darwin University today for a "taste of uni".

Students are being given hands-on activities and information in a range of
discipline areas including Law, Business, Accounting, Engineering,
Indigenous Studies and Resource Management; Education, Conservation,
Trades, Information Technology, Nursing, Sports Science, Fine Arts and
Music.

Professor MaryAnn Bin-Sallik, Dean of Indigenous Research and Education,
said the objectives of the day were to:

   Deliver a short program to introduce university as a next step after
   high school, including higher education, vocational education and trade
   opportunities;
   Provide information about a range of course options and the year 11 and
   12 subjects needed to get into specific discipline areas;
   Explain different pathways into specific programs;
   Highlight academic and other support available at CDU;
   Link Indigenous year 10 students with Indigenous Academic Support
   Lecturers who will assist them in their transition through to year 12;
   Take part in a project that will provide a smooth transition to the
   enrolment into their selected career program whether it be higher
   education, the trades, or VET.

Students and staff attending are from Darwin, Nightcliff, Sanderson and
Taminmin high schools, the Ludmilla Alternative Project Program, Kormilda
College, Marrara Christian College and O'Loughlin Catholic College.

A similar activity will be held on the Alice Springs campus on Thursday
June 9.

Professor Bin-Sallik will be available for interview
