<p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Call for Papers: The Lampshade in film<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">One of the central signifying objects found in a film's mise-en-scene is the lampshade. Never just a source of light, shadow, and shade, the lampshade is an active 'agent' in the way stories
unfold, characters interact, and how mood and emotion flood or leave the scene. Through their colour, design, and spatial positioning, the lampshade foreshadows narrative action, brings tension and release to a scene, and helps place or situate the film into
its genre. Social class and taste distinctions; a film's historical period; and the representation of gender, race and ethnicity, and sexuality can all be signified in part through the lampshade's aesthetics and its iconography; to the way it is touched, knocked
over, turned on/off, flickers, illuminates, desaturates, and hums. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">In this call for papers I am looking for abstracts that read the lampshade in film from any number of perspectives including close textual analysis of one film or many; specific narrative or
generic readings (such as the lampshade in science fiction film, or the melodrama); historical and contextual analysis that explores the lampshade as anchoring period, style, or culture; ideological and representational analysis that reads the lampshade as
a 'strategy' to Other or define various identity positions; and from design and production-led considerations. Films can be from any period and from any national or transnational cinema.
