to concepts of truth and falsity by developments in the current media environment. </span><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Avenir Roman", sans-serif;">It focuses on the ethical and aesthetic dimensions of media ecology, where audiovisual narrative
forms no longer rely on a strict division between ‘the true’ and ‘the false’ but rather engage with belief and disbelief, affective transformation, and the provocation of thought.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Avenir Roman", sans-serif;">Over the past twenty years, critics and scholars have pursued the study of new media to an ever more distant—“archaeological,” “geological,” and even “elemental”—past.
This talk considers the image in an even longer <i>durée</i>: specifically, I argue that the nature of the screen, which dominates contemporary visual culture, ought to be grasped in an evolutionary and even astrobiological history. More profoundly still,
my lecture contends that the introduction of moving-image technology (“kinema”) marks an evolutionary event, namely, the possibility of fabulating images of evolution (of images). Hence, I conclude by looking at Terrence Mallick’s two “prehistoric” films—<i>The
Tree of Life</i> (2011) and <i>The Voyage of Time</i> (2016)—to grapple with the imbrication of moving images and cosmogenesis.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
