8pt;line-height:11.75pt;background:white"><span style="color:rgb(34,34,34)">Technological infrastructures, ranging from mobile phone towers, expanded coverage, spectrum licenses and pre-paid services, have played a key role in state and company efforts to address the digital divide via mobile technologies. But what happens when the mobile phone is positioned within a collective society where most communication practices are carried out and governed by a community? Her PhD thesis, “<i>The Space in-between: An Ethnographic Study of Mobile Technology and Social Change in Rural Samoa” </i>examined the changing communicative ecologies of village Samoa and its relationship to the <i>va</i>, a ‘thread’ that exists in every gesture, speech and interaction between Samoans.
