<p style="margin:10px 0;padding:0;color:#202020;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:16px;line-height:150%;text-align:left">In recent years film and television scholarship has seen a renewed focus on <em>the uses of cinema</em> – that is, on educational, instructional, non-theatrical, client-sponsored and government-sponsored filmmaking – in collections such as <em>Films That Work </em>(Hediger and Vonderau, 2009), <em>Useful Cinema </em>(Acland and Wasson, 2011), <em>Films of Fact: A History of Science in Documentary Films and Television</em>
(Boon 2008) and<em> Learning with the Lights Off: Educational Film</em>(Orgeron, Orgeron and Streible 2012).<br>
This work – along with 2018’s fiftieth anniversary of the events of May 1968 – provides an occasion for reflection upon <em>the usefulness of film</em> and television practice and scholarship, and offers twin points of reference for the Second Biennial Conference of the Screen Studies Association of Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand (SSAAANZ).</p>
<p style="margin:10px 0;padding:0;color:#202020;font-family:Helvetica;font-size:16px;line-height:150%;text-align:left">SSAAANZ invites papers and panel suggestions from researchers, archivists, educators, policymakers, and practitioners on any aspects of <em>the </em><em>critical, social and political uses of cinema</em> including, <em>but not limited</em> to the following themes:</p>
