This seminar will use an examination of two recent feature films that foreground popular music and youth culture — Andrea Arnold’s
<em>American Honey</em> (2016) and Céline Sciamma’s <em>Bande de filles</em> (‘Girlhood’, 2014) — to consider the crossovers between screen media in an age of smartphones, tablets, and YouTube. In each of these films, a song by the popular artist Rihanna momentarily
dominates the screen and the soundtrack, creating scenes that are akin to music videos placed in the middle of the filmic narrative. This seminar aims to explore the resonances of these musical moments, seeing/hearing them in relation to the music videos of
Rihanna. Using clips from the films and from Rihanna’s videos, we will examine the interweaving of popular music culture with cinema, focusing in particular on the complex play of power and objectification that is enacted through the depiction of the female
body in dance.<br>
<br>
<strong>Kate Bolgar Smith </strong>is a research associate at <strong>SOAS, University of London</strong>. Her research interests lie in the interactions between film, sound, and space. Kate completed her Ph.D. on the soundtracks of films made by diasporic
and migrant filmmakers in London and Paris at SOAS in 2016. She has since moved to Melbourne where she is creating sound-maps of the city through an audio interview project about people’s relationships with music. She is currently writing her first monograph
