Scientific discoveries such as mirror neurons, synaesthesia and embodied simulation are now informing theories of spectatorship. <br><br>Notions of embodiment and multisensoriality have come to challenge the idea that the visual arts engage our sense of vision only. Researchers have demonstrated the tactility of images, and pointed to the unconscious participation of the body and the senses in our encounter with the audiovisual and the photographic.<br><br>This symposium will offer the opportunity for discussion of spectatorship as the site at which the materiality of the body and social, cultural and political processes meet. <br></p><table
