<p><strong>Dance Digitisation: transformations in dance knowledge, interdisciplinary exchanges and points of contact between machines and movement in the 21st century</strong></p>

<p>A PhD scholarship is available in Coventry University - Deakin University Co-tutelle PhD Programme in Deakin Motion Lab-Centre for Creative Arts Research. The PhD student, under the guidance of the Chief Investigator, will initiate and conduct research on
the topic of ‘Dance Digitisation: transformations in dance knowledge, interdisciplinary exchanges and points of contact between machines and movement in the 21st century’ led by Professor Kim Vincs.</p>

<p>Dance Digitisation: transformations in dance knowledge, interdisciplinary exchanges and points of contact between machines and movement in the 21st century.</p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong>Aim of the project</strong></p>
<p>Dance digitisation takes on new meaning in light of 21st century development of digital and networked media combined with important changes in contemporary dance practice. These changes in dance are evidenced by the growing commitment of dance artists to
the development of self-determined discourse, opening up new channels of communication about and through their work. </p>
<p>Some of these artists have been experimenting with the possibilities of digital technologies to record, process and transmit their knowledge to others resulting in the creation of interactive installations, DVDs/ book combinations and on line digital archives
and education platforms. This project will examine these developments and has the following overarching questions:</p>

<li>What influence has the digitisation of movement practices, and the data that emerges, had generally on the Movement and Computing field and specifically the area of Human Computer Interaction (HCI)</li><li>In what ways have movement/data researchers drawn on different expert practices and theoretical frameworks to support the digitisation of movement practices and what are the outcomes of these connections?</li><li>What kinds of tools and technological processes participate in the digitisation of dance and movement practices and how could these be developed to further push the potential of a movement/data/technology nexus?</li><li>What new insights to dance and movement systems have emerged through the digitisation process? What is the potential of 3D Immersive VR for research into dance digitisation?</li><li>How has movement knowledge and theories of embodiment expanded and/or changed through digitisation processes?</li><li>How does the digitisation of dance and the data that has emerged through digital processes influenced or changed the work of digital artists and HCI researchers?</li></ul>

<li>A stipend of $26,628 per annum tax exempt (2017 rate)</li><li>A relocation allowance up to $1,500 (2017 rate) awarded to students who are moving from interstate or overseas in order to study at Deakin</li><li>Paid sick, maternity and parental leave</li><li>Tuition fee and overseas health coverage for international students for the duration of 4 years.</li></ul>

<li>Applicants must meet Deakin's PhD entry requirements, be enrolling full-time and hold an Honours degree (First Class) or a Master's degree with a substantial research component in a related field. Please refer to the

entry pathways</a> to higher degrees by research for further information.</li><li>Applicants to this Cotutelle program must meet the additional language requirement of an IELTS overall minimum score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component.</li></ul>
