<i>A Fly in the Curry: Independent Documentary Film in India</i>. Henry Breitrose describes the cinema-verite filmmaker not as a ‘fly on the wall’, a neutral observer, but as a ‘fly in the soup,’ an actor whose presence precipitates action. Based on close readings
of selected films and interviews with documentary filmmakers, the book provides a practitioner’s understanding of the documentary ‘fly in the curry’ in India. Starting from the late 1970s, the authors explore the relation of documentary to social movements;
the question of realism and the blurring of boundaries between the fictive and the real; the turn to reflexivity; and the dynamics of the documentary movement in the Indian public sphere.

EN-US"> are Professors at the School of Media and Cultural
Studies (www. <a href="http://smcs.tiss.edu/">smcs.tiss.edu</a>), Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, India. Their documentary films, which have been screened across the world, have won 32 national and international awards. Their most recent award is
the Basil Wright Prize for <i>So Heddan So Hoddan </i> at the 13th RAI International Festival of Ethnographic Film 2013. They write in the areas of documentary film, censorship and media and cultural studies. Their book
<i>A Fly in the Curry</i>: <i>Independent Documentary Film in India</i> was published by Sage in January 2016. They have been visiting faculty and fellows at media and design institutions and Universities in India and overseas. They are also involved in campaigns
against censorship. Monteiro is at UTS on a Key Technology Partner Fellowship in October-November 2016.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
