The greatest difficulty encountered in Chinese filmic intercultural communication relates to the perception that Chinese cinema does not tell stories in ways that are accepted and understood by Western audiences. In recent years there have been some attempts
by Chinese filmmakers to address this issue; as in, for example, <em>City of Life and Death</em> (Lu Chuan, 2009) and<em> The Flowers of War
</em>(Zhang Yimou, 2011). But these attempts have been recognised by neither Chinese nor overseas audiences. Raising issues of modernity, transnationalism, orientalism and occidentalism, this seminar addresses the issues raised by filmmakers (Chinese and non-Chinese)
who seek to create filmic dialogue in cross-cultural communication between China and the West.<br>
<br>
<strong>Yue Xiao-Ying</strong> is an Associate Professor in the School of Art, Southeast University, Nanjing, P.R. China. Her current research project is on ‘Cross-cultural Communication in Chinese Films’. She is the author of
<em>A study on the narrative structure of Chinese films</em>, published by Southeast University Press in 2010.<br>
