</span><span style="font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:black">term: its centrality, for instance, to 18<sup>th</sup> century moral philosophy and aesthetics, and the mechanisms by which it becomes, in the 19<sup>th</sup> </span><span style="font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1F497D"><br>
</span><span style="font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:black">century, conflated with the largely derisory concept of sentimentalism as an overabundance or banality of feeling, triviality of character,

</span><span style="font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:black">or as a descriptor for bad art. Given the demotion of sentiment to sentimentalism, this symposium invites us to reflect on the status of
