of new revenue streams. However a closer analysis of commenting systems reveals the limits to their democratic potential, and highlights the governance debates emerging around the institutionalisation of participatory journalism.</span><span style="line-height: 21px; font-family: Verdana;"><o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<font class="Apple-style-span" size="3"><span style="line-height: 21px; font-family: Verdana;">In this seminar Fiona Martin explores the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in news commenting, via a comparative study of newscommenting across three countries
and 15 news media sites. The research draws on multimodal analysis of news websites, data analytics on comment streams and interviews with online editorial workers to reveal how the design and governance of commenting systems shapes and constrains participation.
It highlights social and cultural trends in commenting systems, including the dominance of male identified voice, preferences for pseudonymity and the challenges of managing unruly subjectivities. It also provides new insightsinto the differences in user engagement

in September. At this time of rapid andrevolutionary change in modes of communication, the <i>Companion</i> provides the first comprehensive, up-to-date historical account of Australia’s press, broadcasting and new media sectors. Arranged in an A–Z format
are almost 500 articles focusing on both the history and contemporary practice of media corporations, individuals, industries, audiences, policy and regulation since the launch of Australia’s first newspaper in 1803. Nearly 300 media scholars and media contributors
were commissioned to write entries in their areas ofspecialty, and the manuscript is now with the publisher. In this hands-on presentation, I will consider the epistemological and practical challenges of working across all areas of the Australian news media,
