to a civic role, its search for deeper audience knowledge and its exploration of new revenue streams. However a closer analysis of commenting systems reveals the limits to their democratic potential, and highlights the governance debates emerging around the
institutionalisation of participatory journalism.</span><span style="line-height: 150%; font-family: Verdana; "><o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 15pt; line-height: 150%; "><font class="Apple-style-span" size="3"><span style="line-height: 150%; font-family: Verdana; ">In this seminar Fiona Martin explores the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in news commenting,
via a comparative study of newscommenting across three countries and 15 news media sites. The research draws on multimodal analysis of news websites, data analytics on comment streams and interviews with online editorial workers to reveal how the design and
governance of commenting systems shapes and constrains participation. It highlights social and cultural trends in commenting systems, including the dominance of male identified voice, preferences for pseudonymity and the challenges of managing unruly subjectivities.
It also provides new insights into the differences in user engagement and participation across news mediapublications and sectors.</span><span style="line-height: 150%; font-family: Verdana; "><o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
