<p style="margin-bottom: 15px; "><a href="http://cmii.cmail1.com/t/r-l-clubtt-itoqhjuk-s/" style="color: rgb(9, 127, 145); font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none; ">Melissa Terras</a> is Director of UCL Centre for Digital Humanities and Professor of Digital
Humanities in UCL’s Department of Information Studies. With a background in Classical Art History, English Literature, and Computing Science, Melissa is a leader in the Digital Humanities. She is currently serving on the Board of Curators of the University
of Oxford Libraries, and the Board of the National Library of Scotland. Her research focuses on the use of computational techniques to enable research in the arts and humanities that would otherwise be impossible.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 15px; "><span style="font-size: 14px; "><strong>Abstract:</strong></span><br style="line-height: 13px; ">
The traditional model of online heritage, and digital humanities, projects results in fairly static websites that supply digitised content, and perhaps analysis tools, to encourage study in some area of the humanities. However, there are now opportunities that
can be easily taken to use digital media to reach and engage with a wider audience. This opens up Digital Humanities in a different way, allowing us to enter into a dialogue with users, and understand the use and users of digitised content. In this talk, three
projects from UCL Centre for Digital Humanities will be featured, describing how different areas of public engagement have contributed to our research. The<strong>Transcribe Bentham</strong> project uses crowd sourcing to aid in the transcription of historical
manuscripts. <strong>QRator</strong> allows visitors to museums to engage with curators, and debates on museum collections, display, and ethics. <strong>Textal</strong> allows us to study how text analysis is carried out by a large online audience. These
three different approaches demonstrate a shift in Digital Humanities, away from the static online edition, to a participatory environment. What ramifications does this have for research, and for those undertaking Digital Humanities?</p>
