<p>In 2013, The Literature Board of the Australia Council was restructured out of existence as part of a wider review of the Australia Council. Ironically, this happened at a time of transformational change in literary culture and in the policies shaping it.
Literature is enjoying a moment of heightened visibility - present digitally and socially in an unprecedented way. At the same time, governments are innovating in response to opportunities and crises in the literary field. Literature remains the object of
both obscure and high profile policy action - and in some cases of debate.</p>
<p>This lecture, staged to coincide with the Brisbane Writers Festival, examines the state of play in Australian literary policy - including the current controversies around literary awards and the new trends (including literary cities and support for literary
publishing). It seeks to place an international cultural policy frame around local developments and see policy as transforming in relationship to the way community and government uses the literary in social and symbolic content.
