Scorsese is a self-confessed film history fanatic, and has been busy promoting neglected films and filmmakers since the 1970s, and more recently helping to coordinate international restoration of classics. His own films are also about cinema, providing a meta-fictional commentary on how we and he relate to the medium's past. </div>
