Helvetica">"The spectre of comparisons" is borrowed from Philippine national hero Jose Rizal, who coined it in his revolutionary
novel <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">Noli Me Tangere</i>, published in 1886. The spectre generates comparisons and contrasts, or to quote Caroline Hau, it raises "an interplay of difference and oppositions". Familiar signs or objects trigger the weaving
of past with present, of 'here' and 'there', of presence and absence, of home and host country. Researching the Philippines in Melbourne is a constant haunting of 'home'. It intrudes upon the immediacy of our research activities through a global-local dynamic
that is simultaneously liberating and limiting, tied with our personal and professional aspirations, extending as well to national expectations. These carry into the motivations for building bridges among fellow Asian cultural studies proponents. </span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family:Calibri;mso-ascii-theme-font:major-latin;

University. She is a member of the Department of Communication, teaching television and documentary production, broadcasting, communication theory and media studies. She also has served as Program Coordinator for the Masters of Journalism program of the Konrad
Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila, and Director of the Center for Communication Research and Training. She is on her third year of postgraduate studies at La Trobe University, Bundoora, exploring the intersection of nation and media. </span></span></p>

is currently a PhD Student under the Film, Media and Communications Faculty of Monash University. A recipient of the Chancellor’s Lister and a Faculty of Information and Communication Studies Academic Excellence Awardee in 2012, he finished his Masters Degree
in Development Communication at the University of the Philippines, Open University. In 2004, he graduated Magna Cum Laude (With High Honors) at the University of the Philippines, Diliman with a Bachelors Degree in Philippine Studies (Broadcast Communication
and Creative Writing in Filipino as cognates). He is also a recipient of the prestigious Gawad Chancellor for the Most Outstanding Student in the Arts and Humanities Cluster at the University of the Philippines in 2003. Prior to pursuing his PhD, he worked
as a writer/producer in two of the Philippines’ television network, ABS-CBN and TV5, and as an advertising writer/events organizer/blogger for more than 4 years in Brunei Darussalam. His experiences as a media practitioner, as an Overseas Filipino Worker and
his engagement with mobile media have led him to eventually pursue his research interest in migration and new media. His research interest includes mobile media, mobilities, transnationalism, discourse analysis, ritual communication, advertising, popular culture,
gender studies, and communication for social development.</span><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family:Calibri;mso-ascii-theme-font:major-latin;
