aimed at recovering the importance of location for the study of television and media systems in general. Drawing upon the collaboration between cultural anthropology and cultural studies, it seeks new ways of talking about the experience of television – ways
which locate that experience within the patterns and practices of everyday life. Featuring an ethnographic study of the consumption of television in Mexico, but also drawing upon research in Asia, the US, the UK and Australia, it proposes the notion of the
‘zone of consumption’ as an alternative, more contingent and flexible, means of contextualising the consumption of television without necessarily privileging the location of the nation, or the region, or the local, or the domestic sphere. The zone of consumption
could be any or all of these, depending on the practices under examination. Further, as part of the project of this book, Pertierra and Turner also discuss the continuing relevance of the location of the nation, the claims made for the construction of community
across media platforms, and the centrality of television’s enclosure within discourses of modernity.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">The two day symposium will be held on September 5-6, at the University of Queensland, in Brisbane, Australia. As all the speakers presenting are invited,
there will be no call for additional papers. All presentation sessions will be open to anyone interested in attending, but the symposium will end with a closed roundtable discussion involving only the invited participants. A full program will be posted shortly
on the CCCS website.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif""><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span lang="EN" style="font-family:"Arial","sans-serif"">This is to advertise the event to researchers in the field who wish to attend the open sessions, which will run from the morning of September 5 until the
lunch break on September 6. A full program will be up on the website soon. For academic staff members wishing to attend, there is a small registration fee of $100 to cover costs; the fee for postgraduates is $50. Those who wish to register for the event
should RSVP to Rebecca Ralph at the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies (<a href="mailto:r.ralph@uq.edu.au">r.ralph@uq.edu.au</a>) in the first instance until the online registration is operational.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
