In the EU, a transnational entity, those powers are already diluted. Cultural citizenship is far more globalised. Access to satellite television and the internet does connect those of living away from our countries of birth in real time to other nations. This paper draws on the first large scale quantitative and qualitative study of what Arabic speakers in the EU <i>are </i>watching to question assumptions about identity and participation, and the role of media use in constructing citizenship.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:14.0pt'>About the Presenter:<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:14.0pt'><br></span></b><span style='font-size:16.0pt'>Professor Christina Slade is Dean of the Schools of Arts and of Social Sciences at City University London. She led the ’Media and Citizenship’ project as Professor of Media Theory at the University of Utrecht. Trained as a philosopher of logic and language, her research has focussed on issues of the media since 1990.
