</SPAN><FONT SIZE="2"><SPAN STYLE='font-size:10pt'>The transformation of media practices and networks by broadband access, including in rural and regional communities and across cultures and subcultures, has led to a rise in lobbying/activism calling for changed regulatory measures concerning censorship, data management and intellectual property. The internet, once lauded for its liberating and democratizing potential, is now often positioned as a dangerous and unruly space in need of greater surveillance and regulation. Fear and insecurity about the online environment are driving calls for increased regulation and preventative security, especially in relation to children. Discourses of ‘harm’ and ‘risk’ have led to calls for increased bureaucratic intervention in our online lives and an expansion of the responsibilities that burden internet users in ways that multiply this regulatory impact.<BR>
This workshop looks at how risk discourse has impacted upon calls for increased media regulation, particularly of the internet, across three key areas: censorship, surveillance and copyright. Each panel features key speakers whose work has helped theorise and respond to these changes in the regulatory environment through perspectives deriving from law, philosophy, media and cultural studies. Major topics discussed include: <BR>

</FONT><FONT FACE="Symbol">· </FONT><FONT FACE="Calibri, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial">attempts to regulate ‘sexting’ among young people, <BR>
</FONT><FONT FACE="Symbol">· </FONT><FONT FACE="Calibri, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial">young people, pornography and sexual literacy, <BR>
