funded three-year project <i>Australian responses to the images and discourses
of terrorism and the other: Establishing a metric of fear</i> looking at
community, perceptions of fear and people’s understanding of terror. The
Workshop is running to disseminate and discuss the research findings and bring
together those who create the stories, those who make policy, those who manage
policy, those who manage public opinion and those who have been affected by
media reporting, in a public debate about the power of the media and its impact
on our lives. Participants will be working in small groups addressing a

London. John is a survivor of the 7 July 2005 London bombings and his picture was
flashed around the world as he emerged, injured, from Edgware Road
Underground. His book, <i>One Day in July: Experiencing 7/7</i> was
published by Little, Brown Book Group in 2006.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class=MsoNormal>Australian Keynote:<span style='color:#1F497D'> </span>Dr
Anne Aly, Post Doctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Applied Social
Marketing at ECU, has previously<span style='color:#1F497D'> </span>occupied
senior policy positions in government. She is the current President of
Dar al Shifah Islamic Inc.<span style='color:#1F497D'> </span>WA, a volunteer
organisation that offers services to the community and to government.
Anne was the doctoral student on the ARC funded project<span style='color:#1F497D'>
</span>leading to this workshop<span style='color:#1F497D'>,</span> and her
thesis, <i>Audience responses to the Australian media discourse on terrorism
and the‘other’: The fear of terrorism between and among Australian Muslims and
the broader community</i>, was awarded earlier this year.<o:p></o:p></p>
