CALL SUMMARY – LONDON HERITAGES
A little over 25 years ago, the site of this conference, Maritime Greenwich, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Home to the first Palladian building in England, the Royal Naval College by Sir Christopher Wren and the Old Royal Observatory, it is one of the UK’s most important historical sites. It is home to groundbreaking projects in digital heritage and the Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. It is a quintessential site of world heritage. However, as a site located in the city of London, it can be endangered. Threatened by the strains of mass tourism it is at risk of over exposure. Using the World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich as a point of departure then, this conference seeks to explore the critical questions for the heritage sector today from various disciplinary perspectives.

A call from the University of Greenwich. Part of the Critical Heritage Series.

CALL SUMMARY – ARIZONA
Our mediated society has immense potential to open multiple channels of communication about the past, the present and the future. However, mainstream media and cultural content is still primarily formulated by Western priorities – whether that be in news, education or cultural phenomenon such as painting, theatre or storytelling. In terms of storytelling, for example, narrative models are still largely informed by values, beliefs, thoughts and the ethics of a Eurocentric mode of thinking. As a result, perspectives on a shared global past and present that come from other cultures and pasts are still too often ignored. Responding to this scenario, this strand call welcomes critiques on all forms of communication about cultural pasts and presents, whatever their cultural baggage, and whatever their origin.

A strand call from Cesar University School, Brazil. Part of the Society, Spaces, Screens conference hosted at Arizona State University.
