Abstract: In this presentation Dr Sedgwick will present research from her new book Inequality in Contemporary Stand-Up Comedy in the UK. Drawing on a mix of interviews with comedians from the East Midlands of the UK, statistical data and high profile case studies about the industry I will outline how comedy operates in the UK, and how the precarious nature of the industry, as well as the historical exclusion of minoritized groups means that the industry assumes a white, middle class and male norm. Furthermore, I will explore how the lack of organizing with the industry and its informality means that systemic changes are hard to achieve.
Bio: Dr Claire Sedgwick is an Impact Officer at the University of Derby and a researcher in the creative industries. Her current research focuses on the cultural economy of comedy in the East Midlands. Her doctorate has been published as monograph, by Rowman and Littlefield International, entitled Feminist Media: From the Second Wave to the Digital Age.
All welcome and please circulate!
Ciao!
Rosie.
