Academia on Screen: The World of Higher Education in Film and TV Series Across Cultures

Join us to explore cinematic representations of academia and their implications.

This conference aims to explore the multifaceted portrayals of academia and academics in films and TV series, in both fictional and documentary modes, across diverse cultural contexts. We encourage contributions from researchers of various disciplines and cultural backgrounds to discuss representations of academic environments, characters, and narratives. Topics may include:

  * Case studies of specific films or TV series
  * Comparative analyses of portrayals in and across cultures
  * Evolution of academic characters and settings
  * Examination of stereotypes and themes associated with professors, researchers, scientists, students, and/or college or university life
  * Impact on public perceptions of higher education
  * Role of genre in shaping narratives
  * Intersectional analyses of gender, race, disability, and class
  *   Power dynamics in academia
  *   Multimodal constructions in portrayals
  *   Audience reception studies
  *   Comparisons of on-screen and real-life discourses
  * Educational uses of academic portrayals
  *   …

A publication of the conference papers is planned. For more detailed information please visit the conference website https://www.geku.uni-passau.de/en/english-language-and-culture/academia-on-screen.
