Tabitha Lean: Abolishing the colonial carceral state is anti-racism

The UNSW Art, Design, and Architecture Antiracism Collective seminar series for 2022 will conclude with a seminar from abolitionist activist and scholar Tabitha Lean. Lean will discuss how the ongoing project of abolishing the violent structures of the colonial carceral state contributes to anti-racism scholarship.



Tabitha Lean (or as her ancestors know her, Budhin Mingaan) is a Gunditjmara woman living on Boandik country. Tabitha is a storyteller and abolition activist who argues that the criminal punishment system is a brutal and often deadly colonial frontier for her people and uses her lived prison experience to fight for the total abolition of the prison industrial complex.
