Hello,

Andy Terhell (UTAS). The Air Case: A novel approach for making environmental documentary

Rarely does environmental documentary tread the line of impartiality and resist the urge to call its audience to action. A rise in popularity of documentary series has been seen mostly in the topics of true crime, politics and history. While these documentaries engage large and diverse audiences, environmental documentaries mainly appeal to environmentally conscious audiences. This research project poses the question: how can methods from popular documentaries be used for environmental storytelling to reach broader audiences? In this presentation, I outline my practice-based research project, which includes the production of a series of short documentary films. My focus is on eco-tourism developments in Tasmania, using the controversial Lake Malbena standing camp proposal as an example.

About the Speaker

Andy Terhell is an associate lecturer in Media at The University of Tasmania’s Media School. He is also a passionate digital content creator interested in factual filmmaking in the fields of environment, science, adventure and sport. He has filmed content from the top of Tasmania’s tallest trees down to the bottom of its deepest caves. The Air Case is a Masters by Research project.
