Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the publication of the first book in the 33 1/3 Oceania series published by Bloomsbury, Emeritus Professor Graeme Turner’s Whispering Jack. Released in 1986, this album transformed John Farnham’s career and is a cornerstone of Australian popular music.

I’m sure all of you will be familiar with Graeme’s work. He is an internationally known Cultural Studies scholar and one of the founders of Cultural Studies and Media Studies, and more recently Celebrity Studies, in Australia. Graeme has also co-edited Rock and Popular Music: Politics, Policies and Institutions and published many essays related to Australian popular music.

From the back cover of Whispering Jack: ‘The album examined in this book transformed the singer John Farnham from a faded teen pop star into the most popular solo rock performer in Australia, in a career that has lasted for more than 30 years. Whispering Jack remains the top-selling album by an Australian artist in Australia, and constitutes the turning point in Farnham's bid to achieve credibility as an adult contemporary musician.’

Later this year, the next two books in the series will be published: Chris Gibson on the Church’s album Starfish and Lachlan Goold and Lauren Istvandity on Regurgitator’s album Unit. By the end of this year five more books will be in press, on Kylie Minogue’s album Kylie, Space Waltz’s self-titled album, the Dead C’s album Clyma Est Mort, Ed Kuepper’s album Honey Steel’s Gold and Hunters and Collectors’ album Human Frailty
