Abstract: Given the importance the Australian Science Curriculum places on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education, there is a need for researchers and educators to translate requirements into meaningful, culturally authentic best practice.

To illustrate how STEM educational projects might work in this cross-cultural space, a co-designed, inter and trans-disciplinary, place-based pilot research project, involving one regional upper-primary school community, will investigate how knowledge of traditional First Nation fish trap engineering can deepen the value and relevance of STEM education for teachers and students, and strengthen ties with the local community.

Nicholas William Ruddell was born in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and moved to Australia in the late 1980’s. He retains his connection to his Whakapapa (heritage) through his association with his tino-iwi-the Ngāpuhi and iwi tuturu the Ngātiwai. He has gained experience working with Indigenous Australian people and their communities of which they are a part, through the lens of his upbringing. That is to say, he has forged relationships based on respect for family, community, and the land they occupy. Nicholas is a Lecturer in Indigenous Education at Charles Sturt University. He has been the recipient of an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) Scholarship. His PhD examined an innovative middle school science teaching and learning program that included both Indigenous and western knowledge systems. Critical Indigenous studies remains his area of interest.
