Title: "The Movie in the Living Room: Negotiating Production and Reception in Cinematic Television."
Presenter: Dr. Chris Comerford, University of Technology Sydney
Respondent: Dr. Natalie Krikowa, University of Technology Sydney
Date and time: Tuesday 10th September, 5:45pm
Venue: CB10.02.330, University of Technology Sydney
Abstract:
This project maps “cinematic television” and its redefinition of the boundaries of audience/producer and film/television. Following changes in the 2010s thanks to digital distribution, fan efforts, niche audiences and transnational content, television is subject to various tensions regarding definition and consumption of screen media. The seminar traces three of these key tensions, namely:
• The rise of the “TV auteur” figure.
• The transformation of traditional critical and aesthetic models of appraisal employed by industry and audience.
• Marketing, distribution and algorithms, subsequently positing questions of “medium determinism”: did (and do) audiences ever actually ask for movie-like TV?
Bio: Dr. Chris Comerford is a digital media and cultural studies academic at the University of Technology Sydney. His research focuses on online fandom, screen audiences and the increasingly-blurred relations between pop culture consumers and industry producers, analysed predominantly through television, film and graphic novels in the superhero, gothic, fantasy and science fiction genres. He has been published in the edited volumes, Heroism and Wellbeing in the 21st Century: Applied and Emerging Perspectives, and Graphic Justice: Intersections of Comics and Law. His work has also appeared in IM: Interactive Media, Studies in Costume and Performance, Film Criticism, Peephole Journal and Participations: International Journal of Audience Research.
Refreshments will be served during the seminar.
