The debate about the proposed Ramsay Centre for Western Civilization has been exercising Australian academics over the course of 2018. The Australian Critical Race and Whiteness Studies Association Blog<https://acrawsa.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7d57ac7fe4880c1c93990fc1c&id=0c7b6ec0ed&e=aaff8c9d5a> asks what this means for the future of Indigenous and Critical Race Studies. How are discussions about the Ramsay Centre BA which intends to teach 'western civilization' to a handpicked cohort of elite students challenging our efforts to decolonize the curriculum and advance sovereign Indigenous knowledge in settler colonial Australia? Where do these debates sit within the ever-revolving record of the culture wars within the context of an electoral cycle? And how do these debates sit within an international scholarly context and relate to intellectual histories from the last century?

All of these questions are explored in four contributions:

Introduction: The ‘Marketplace of ideas’ has only one idea (Alana Lentin)<https://acrawsa.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7d57ac7fe4880c1c93990fc1c&id=3b4ffbfa7e&e=aaff8c9d5a>
Alana Lentin introduces the symposium by arguing that opposing the Ramsay Centre on the basis of academic freedom alone is an insufficient defense of the actually existing multiracial university and the student demand for non-metaphorical decolonization

What Max Weber Teaches Us About the Ramsay Centre’s Debate (Robbie Shilliam)<https://acrawsa.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7d57ac7fe4880c1c93990fc1c&id=63838a377f&e=aaff8c9d5a>
Robbie Shilliam looks at what we can learn from Max Weber to understand the 'culture wars' which engulf politics and especially characterize the context for the emergence of the Ramsay Centre.

Decolonising the Academy When They Say Identity Politics and Political Correctness Have Gone Mad (Carolyn D'Cruz)<https://acrawsa.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7d57ac7fe4880c1c93990fc1c&id=c2322544f2&e=aaff8c9d5a>
Carolyn D'Cruz takes an incisive look at the confected hysteria on both right and left about identity politics and 'political correctness' and what this means for decolonizing the academy.

“What kind of question is that?”: The University of Sydney, the Ramsay Centre proposal and the scorched earth of Indigenous teaching and research on campus (Victoria Grieves-Williams)<https://acrawsa.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7d57ac7fe4880c1c93990fc1c&id=f584427b2b&e=aaff8c9d5a>
Victoria Grieves-Williams sets the University of Sydney's management's openness to the Ramsay Centre in the context of the scorched earth policy regarding Indigenous education since the closure of the Koori Centre at Sydney University.
