When Tuesday 23 Oct, 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Where G17, Robert Webster Building, UNSW Sydney

Provocations on Hope
From the disruptive effects of new technologies and the already arriving catastrophe of climate change to the rise of grievance politics and the erosion of civil institutions, reasons for hope are thin on the ground. In the humanities, our reflexive position is often one of critique. Yet as a slew of scholars from Bruno Latour to Rita Felski to Fred Moten have argued, critique – however vital – is only one response to the world. In the spirit of seeking alternative orientations, moods and attachments to the challenges of the contemporary moment, the final SAM Seminar of 2018 will feature a collection of short provocations on hope in all its forms. These provocations—creative, performative, analytical and philosophical—are gestures intended to open up spaces for discussion and debate.
Hope’s provocateurs are Collin Chua, Brigid Costello Maria Jackson, Sonya Lifschitz, Jane Mills, Alyssa Rothwell and Nicholas Richardson.
Please join us afterward for drinks, snacks and hopeful conversation – at the seminar and then afterwards at the Roundhouse.
