High Barriers, Low Pay – The Economic Realities for Australian Screenwriters

Monday 14th May, 5pm - 7.30pm
Room 1.47, Australian Film Television and Radio School, Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park

This seminar will present the main findings from the 2016/2017 Screenwriters Economic Situation Survey (Marin/Balfour 2016/2017) which collected data on pay levels and payment types as well as economic and professional opportunities for screenwriters within Australia. The Seminar will also contrast these findings with similar research undertaken in Europe (Johns, 2013, UK) and North America (WGA Hollywood Writers’ Report, 2014).
The survey was conducted as part of professional academic research in 2016/2017 by researcher Gabiann Marin with assistance from David Balfour at the Australian Film Television and Radio School and supported through the Australian Writer’s Guild.

Gabiann Marin
Gabiann Marin is a lecturer in Screen Business, Writing, Popular Culture and Screen History at several Universities and tertiary intuitions including the Australian Film, Television and Radio School, Macquarie University and JMC Creative Academy. She is also a successful writer in stage, screen, broadcast and multimedia; having won multiple awards including the 2017 ATOM award for best Educational interactive for her work on Kids Together Now.
Since 2000 she has owned and operated one of Sydney’s original independent writer development agencies – Telltales Script and Story Development, through which she has helped develop over 200 independent projects towards production or publication. As well as lecturing, writing and developing work; Gabiann is completing her PhD at Macquarie University - focussing on the evolution of mythical storytelling in contemporary fiction.

Refreshments will be served during the seminar. All are welcome.
