"Post-Dictatorship Documentary in Chile: Conversations with Three Second-Generation Film Directors"

The article’s third interview, of particular interest to Australians, is with young Chilean filmmaker Lissette Orozco, writer-director of the documentary Adriana’s Pact (2017). Sydney woman Adriana Rivas is a fugitive of the Chilean justice system, sought in relation to cases of kidnapping, torture and murder dating back to her time as an agent of General Pinochet’s secret service in Chile in the 1970s. In her film, Orozco, who is Adriana Rivas’s niece, explores her process of finding out and coming to terms with her Australian aunt’s hidden past. In my article’s interview, Orozco describes and reflects upon the process of making the film and its consequences for her and her family. Adriana Rivas gained notoriety in Australia when she callously justified the use of torture by governments on an SBS interview broadcast nationally in 2013, while the Australian government failed to agree to a formal Chilean government request for her extradition in spite of domestic and international pressure. Orozco’s Adriana’s Pact screened at last year’s Sydney Latin American Film Festival as well as the 2017 Berlin Film Festival, where it received the Peace Award.
