Remediations of Literary Modernism:
Heiner Goebbels

When Tuesday 21 March, 5 – 6.30pm
Where Cinema 327, Robert Webster Building, UNSW Kensington

The acclaimed contemporary theatre works by experimental theatre maker and composer, Heiner Goebbels, return us to compositional problems inherited from modernism left in the wake of Artaudian rejections of the literary.

In this presentation, I want to suggest that iterations of a multifocal, collectively autonomous avant-garde theatre can be achieved through the radical remediation of literary modernism as much as by rejecting literary modernism’s inheritance. By staging a renegotiated modernist literary past, Goebbels develops a compositional approach to performance displacing the authority of literary capital and galvanizing the possibility of a collective event of theatre.

Corey Wakeling is Lecturer in Drama at Kobe College, receiving a PhD in English and Theatre Studies from the University of Melbourne in 2013. He has published essays in journals such as TDR: The Drama Review, Performance Research, Westerly, Cordite Poetry Review, Plumwood Mountain, and Fusion Journal. His current research involves renegotiating spectatorial and readerly phenomenologies in contemporary performance and contemporary poetry.
