Dear colleagues,

Please find below information about the Emerging Approaches to Rhetoric conference being held at the University of Sydney next Thursday and Friday (8-9 Dec), featuring A/Prof Ku’ualoha Ho’omanawanui (University of Hawaii), author of a key reading in indigenous literary studies, Voices of Fire: Reweaving the Lei of Pele and Hi’aka (2014). The conference includes a workshop with A/Prof Ho’omanawanui on Thursday, a film screening and discussion of ‘Sons of Halawa’ at the Street University in Liverpool on Thursday evening, and a day of academic presentations about writing, communication, rhetoric, and culture on Friday. 

All are welcome to this free event – please RSVP to Dr Benjamin Miller (benjamin.miller at sydney.edu.au) by Mon 5 Dec for catering purposes and to receive a conference program. All attendees of the Thursday workshop will be forwarded a preparatory reading.

       (329, Old Teachers’ College, University of Sydney)
630pm-9pm: 	Film Screening and Panel Discussion – ‘Sons of Halawa’ 
       (Street University, 1 Speed St, Liverpool)

Friday 9 Dec
All Friday sessions will be held in 306, Old Teachers’ College (OTC), University of Sydney. Morning tea (11am), lunch (1pm) and afternoon tea (330pm) will be served in 329 OTC.

930-11am: 	Indigenous rhetorics
1130am-1pm: 	New rhetorics
2-330pm: 	Keynote (A/Prof Ho’omanawanui): Approaching indigenous rhetorics
4-530pm: 	Rhetorics of social justice
530-630pm: 	Closing discussion: New approaches to writing studies

This conference is made possible by funding from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Pacific Studies Network at the University of Sydney. The Thursday evening film screening has been organized in association with the Free University of Western Sydney, Street University, Noffs Foundation, Pasifika Film Festival, and Oz Harvest.
