Witnessing what happens when lessons are not learned: Calais, Lesbos, and families held apart.
Lecture by Professor Alison Phipps
At times of great human suffering we see extraordinary courage and compassion. Communities across Europe have led with creativity, practical action and costly generosity. The people have led where larger institutions and governments have been slow, reluctant and mired in outdated thinking and ineffective solutions.
At the same time we have witnessed a vicious rise in xenophobia and structural violence against refugees.
In this lecture, Professor Phipps will draw on her recent experiences in Calais, France where offshore processing is used to manage migrants attempting to cross the Channel from France to England.

She has undertaken work in Palestine, Sudan, Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, Germany, France, USA, Portugal and Ghana. Alison is visiting the Hawke EU Centre for one month as part of the Centre’s EU Thinker in Residence program.

Presented by the Hawke EU Centre for Mobilities, Migrations and Cultural Transformations and UniSA’s Refugee and Migration Research Network.
