About the seminar:
In this presentation, Professor Julian Thomas (Swinburne University of Technology) will discuss The Australian Digital Inclusion Index, a measurement tool that addresses the need for informed public policy and projects to enhance digital inclusion in Australia. As the Internet becomes increasingly central to everyday life, the social and economic consequences of digital exclusion also increase. However, the challenge of the “narrowing but deepening” digital divide presents immediate problems for both researchers and policy makers. Although substantial progress has been made on understanding digital exclusion at national and community levels in Australia, the absence of a sufficiently granular, longitudinal dataset has been a continuing limitation across all disciplines. And without comparable measures of the digital divide, the benefits of interventions are often poorly understood. The Australian Digital Inclusion Index is an ongoing, collaborative project which aims to address these issues. This talk outlines the Index’s objectives, design, main national and NSW findings, as well as possible uses in research, policy and practice.
