Urban Politics: Master Class with Andy Merrifield
(Writer, social theorist and urban geographer)

Deakin University’s Faculty of Arts and Education warmly welcomes Postgraduate students to submit an Expression of Interest to participate in a free Master Class with Andy Merrifield. This Master Class is a unique opportunity to briefly discuss your own work and develop synergies with other students in a supportive and generative group setting. You will have the opportunity to present your work and get valuable feedback from an internationally acclaimed urban social theorist. This will be followed by a discussion of key readings. ​

Andy Merrifield is an independent scholar, writer, social theorist and urban geographer. He has written many articles, essays and reviews in both scholarly and popular publications and is the author of numerous books, including most recently Magical Marxism (Pluto, 2011), John Berger (Reaktion, 2012), The Politics of the Encounter (University of Georgia Press, 2013), and The New Urban Question (Pluto, 2014). His latest work, The Amateur, is forthcoming next year with Verso. Merrifield is a contributing editor of Adbusters.

 Program
9.30-10.00: Registration and coffee
10.00-11.20: Welcome and brief introductions, students introduce themselves and their research (5 min presentations) briefly and informally
11.20-12.00: Informal talk/discussion/response by Andy Merrifield
12.00-12.30: Lunch - Students are responsible for their own lunch – there are many options on campus.
12.30 -2.00pm: Discussion of readings
