*Acting and Meaning Potential Studies of Facial Expressions in Roman
Holiday (1953): **A Social Semiotic Perspective*
Tuesday 3rd May, 5 - 7pm Room 327, Robert Webster Building, UNSW

A review of the film acting and social semiotic literatures suggest a
number of issues for further consideration and research. Firstly, it
appears that systemic methods or theories of film acting are difficult to
be found and film analysts tend to borrow acting theories from theatre when
doing research. Secondly, while multimodal relations in episodes of film
have been researched by multimodal scholars (van Leeuwen 1991,
2005; Bateman et al 2012) few scholars have yet explored the semiotics in
film acting. This paper takes a social semiotic perspective to study the
facial acting of film actors, in particular the acting of Gregory Peck,
Audrey Hepburn and Eddie Albert in the 1953 classic *Roman Holiday*. It
will explore how the facial acting skills work together with directing,
filming and editing techniques to engender meaning potentials and to
develop story and characters.

*Zhen Zhang (UTS) *is a PhD student of Communication in Faculty of Arts and
Social Sciences. Her research involves acting and meaning potential studies
on film discourse taking a social semiotic perspective.
