Dear CSAA-ers,

Some of you might be interested in the podcasts of the keynote lectures at last year’s Space, Race, Bodies conference. They can be found online here: http://www.otago.ac.nz/mfco/research/otago071501.html (for vodcasts) and here: http://spaceracebodies.webs.com/podcasts (for podcasts).

Keynote lectures included:

Professor Joseph Pugliese (Macquarie University), Death by Metadata and Its Transliteration to Flesh, which outlines how racio-speciesism intersects with what Pugliese calls the ‘bioinformalisation of life’ in the context of the US’ drone kill program.

Associate Professor Susan Stryker (University of Arizona), Otherwise that Analogy: The Paralogous Relations of Transgender, Ethnicity, and Color in Regimes of Biopolitical Racialization, where Stryker, drawing on the work of Jean-Francois Lyotard, develops the notion of paralogy to ask, “how do you talk similarity non-analogically?”

Associate Professor Jacinta Ruru (University of Otago), Troubled Space: Tensions in Indigenous and colonial notions of national space, discusses how settler colonialism constructs space in particular ways and the possibility for Indigenous sovereignty in the context of the Te Urewera–Tūhoe Act (2014), which vests a form of legal ‘personhood’ in Te Urewera to be managed by Tūhoe.

Finally, Dr. Rebecca Stringer (University of Otago) in her lecture, Feminism and Victim Politics in Neoliberal Times, outlines the imbrication of feminist critiques of the ‘victim’ with conservative and neoliberal anti-victim politics.

Please also visit the rest of our SRB site (http://spaceracebodies.webs.com) for a collection of tweets, photos and other information from the conference. If you have information about upcoming CFPs or related events, we’d be happy to share this on the site.

Cheers,
Holly
(on behalf of Mahdis and the SRB collective)

"Under Thatcher, who ruled us with an iron rod, great art was made. Amazing designers and musicians. Acid house was born. Very colourful and progressive.
Now, no one’s got anything to say. Write a song? No thanks, I’ll say it on Twitter. It’s a sad state when more people retweet than buy records" - Noel Gallagher
