Abstract

We inhabit an age of circulating, fractal and phantom flesh where organs are exchanged, the body is prosthetically augmented, and we operate as avatars online. What a body is and how a body performs becomes problematic. The body is a contemporary chimera of meat, metal and code performing remotely as an extended operational system. Still a biological body but now accelerated by its machines, enhanced by its instruments and increasingly informed by the massive data streams generated in virtual systems. All technology in the future will be invisible because it is inside the body. Micro and nano machines will recolonize the human body, augmenting its bacterial populations and provide early alert warning systems for internal pathological conditions. The artist will refer to his projects and recent research to provide an overview of body, machine and computer interface.

This public lecture will be preceded by a masterclass.

Places for this masterclass are strictly limited. To apply please email expressions of interest to elizabeth.stephens at scu.edu.au<mailto:elizabeth.stephens at scu.edu.au>

Masterclass: "AFFECT & THE BODY: From Butoh to Performance Art

Date: Monday, June 29

Time: TBA

Venue: SCU Lismore

The body in performance will be considered in diverse approaches to this practice in contemporary art from Butoh dance to the somewhat extreme actions of Performance Art and the more recent machinimas of Second Life avatar performances. This class will not only present specific performance examples but also will discuss the possibilities and problematics of presence and absence, embodiment, identity and agency as expressed in these performance practices. Performance is seen as an art form that merges expression and experience and that is more about affect than information.

Biographical Note

Stelarc explores Mixed and Augmented Realities. He has performed with a Third Hand, a Stomach Sculpture, Exoskeleton and a Prosthetic Head. He is surgically constructing and stem-cell growing an ear on his arm that will be internet enabled. In 1996 he was made an Honorary Professor of Art and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh and in 2002 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by Monash University, Melbourne. In 2010 was awarded the Ars Electronica Hybrid Arts Prize. In 2015 he received the Australia Council's Emerging and Experimental Arts Award.
