Screening: *Russian Ark* (2002)Friday 1st May, 4 - 6.30pm
Room 327, Robert Webster Building, UNSW, Sydney

Alexander Sokurov’s *Russian Ark* explores nostalgia, rapid change and
‘Europeanness’ by weaving its narrative through 300 years of Russian history.
The film broke records by using a single, constantly travelling long take
that spans the entire 99-minute running time. Throughout, the camera
follows behind a man, identified only as ‘the European’, whose frequent
direct address to the camera breaks down and rebuilds the fourth wall, also
inviting the viewer’s active participation in Sokurov’s fluid presentation
of history. The grand scale and unusual production challenges with which
the film was produced opens up questions of how Sokurov’s complex
choreography of the camera complicates the co-ordination of the
mise-en-scene it captures. In this screening, we will also discuss:

   - How does the unbroken tracking shot affect the viewer’s perception of
   realism?
   - What kind of relationship between viewer and screen does this create?
   - Does Sokurov’s film offer an advance towards the cinematic dream of
   continual subjective narration?
   - What kind of image of history does Sokurov provide us with?

*Melanie Robson* is a Ph.D. candidate and tutor at UNSW in the School of
the Arts & Media. Her thesis investigates the aesthetic, politcal and
ethical role of the long take in contemporary European cinema.
