The Survival of the Friendliest:
Learning to be a writer in contemporary India
Tuesday 31 March, 5pm to 6.30pm
Robert Webster Building, Room 327
Drawing on fieldwork from a 2011-14 empirical study of writers of English fiction in India, this paper will argue that the habitus of writers working in India today is shaped by a contradictory relationship with economic profit. Therefore, unable to earn a living from writing fiction, writers must lead multiple lives. In doing so, writers mobilise what I term ‘practices of friendliness’ as they attempt to achieve economic and symbolic success. These practices of friendliness are deployed as legitimizing strategies in the Indian literary field, in order to create and maintain social relations between writers, literary agents, and publishers, as well as to resist control.
