Do the often negative narratives around the drift to private schools, testing, ranking and teacher quality perpetuated by the media have on impact on the formation of policy and the implementation of practice in our schools?

A panel of school principals and teacher trainers join our national education reporter for a robust discussion on how our school system is represented in the mainstream media.

About the Speakers

Jane Caro is a novelist, lecturer, social commentator and broadcaster. She has appeared on ABC's Q & A, Sunrise, The Project, The Drum and The Gruen Transfer. she regularly contributes to The Sydney Morning Herald, The Conversation, Mamamia, The Hoopla and New Matilda. Her books include What makes a good school? (with Chris Bonner, 2012).

Chris Cawsey AM, is principal of Rooty Hill High School, a highly successful, cosmopolitan, comprehensive 7-12 school in the western suburbs of Sydney. She is the immediate past president of the NSW Secondary Principals' Council (NSWSPC), a member of The Smith Family, ACEL, GWS Giants AFL Club, and a former member of the executive of the Australian Secondary Principals' Association.

Justine Ferrari, is a journalist at The Australian. She has covered politics at the federal and NSW levels, been chief-of-staff on The Australian and The Sunday Telegraph, as well as editing various sections. Since 2006, Justine has been the national education correspondent on The Australian, focusing on school education and the emerging national debate on curriculum, testing, reporting, funding and teaching standards.

Dr Helen Proctor, is a lecturer on the history of education in the Faculty of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney. Helen is a co-author with Craig Campbell and Geoffrey Sherington of School Choice: how parents negotiate the new school market in Australia (2009) and with Craig Campell A History of Australian Schooling (2013).

Professor Gerard Goggin (panel chair), is Head of the Department of Media and Communications in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. His research focusses on social, cultural, and political aspects of digital technologies, especially the Internet and mobile phones and media.
