Australian Media Classification
PhD Scholarship at the University of Sydney

Background: This PhD project will contribute to a 2015-2017 Australian Research Council Discovery Project entitled “Media Classification Systems: An International Comparative Study”. This Project investigates the international emergence of media classification systems, the relations between national systems, and their significant impact on the everyday lives of media audiences, especially minors and their families, as well as their role in articulating relations between media industries, cultural producers, government agencies, and states.
Project description: The designated PhD project will focus on the Australian media classification system, investigating its emergence, transformation, and practices. The successful applicant will be working in particular collaboration with a Participant Investigator in the Office of the Attorney General and the Australian Classification Branch as well as with the broader research team.

Supervisors: Dr Liam Grealy & Professor Catherine Driscoll
Stipend: starting at AUD$25, 849 (indexed annually, non-taxable). The duration of the scholarship will be three years with a six month extension available if required on academic grounds.
Start date: 1 March 2015 preferred (applicants available only from 1 July 2015 will be considered)
Desirable skills and qualifications: Applicants should have a first class honours degree or an equivalent Masters degree in cultural studies or a related field (gender studies, history, media studies, policy studies or sociology would all be suitable backgrounds, for example). Excellent written and other communication skills are required. As this project will be closely associated with a research team evidence of ability to work in a team may be an advantage.
Location: This position is based in the Department of Gender and Cultural, in the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry, at the University of Sydney. This department offers an active and supportive research culture, focused research training, and opportunities for additional competitive research funding applications.
