Professor of Modern German and Comparative Culture
Cambridge University

This paper will consider the performance of care in the latest feature by leading Berlin School director, Christian Petzold. Set in and around a provincial hospital in the GDR of 1980, the film explores the possibility of a viable ethics of care in personal performance when subject to the biopolitical ‘care’ of the state. The paper will centre on a scene in which Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp is subjected to diagnosis, apparently as an allegory of a just praxis of care.
