Critical Animal Studies in the Asia-Pacific: class, culture, gender and identity.
Guest edited by Colin Salter
Alongside what are largely ubiquitous and normative bases of exploitation around the globe, regional paradigms and particularities present themselves in the ways in which animals are socially constructed. Building on the success of the 2014 Institute for Critical Animal Studies Oceania Conference, contributions are sought that directly engage with such paradigms and particularities.
Of particular interest are works that contribute to a broader and nuanced understanding of the performative in logics of domination. The manifestations-intersections of exploitation within and across class, culture, gender, identity and species in the Asia-Pacific are of key interest.
Suggested topics include:
• the mapping of ideologies (nation, gender, masculinity, class) onto animal bodies
• animal geographies
• Ecofeminist and Posthumanist ethics
• animals in art, film and literature
• Queering and gendering speciesism
• approaches to activism and social change
Abstracts submissions close on August 26, with an November 21 deadline for completed manuscripts. The special issue will be published in 2015.
ASJ is open access, and all submissions pass through a double-blind peer review process. More information is available at http://ro.uow.edu.au/asj/.
