Postgraduate Communication Conference
Friday July 6
300 Flinders Lane, Level 11
Room 1105

Dear colleagues,

we are very excited to announce the 2014 VU Communication Conference which is lucky enough to have keynote speaker John Thompson presenting after lunch. One of many successful alumni from Victoria University, John is now Managing Director of Mitchell and Partners’ Victorian Government Media Team, after several years as Senior Manager of Road Safety and Marketing at the Traffic Accident Commission.

We very much hope you are able to attend this exciting event, which features a series of fascinating presentations from postgraduate Communication students in the morning and an academic panel presenting on Research in the Digital Environment in the afternoon.

Associate Professor Kristin Demetrious from Deakin University will present on the ARC (LIEF) funded TrISMA project. TrISMA aims to develop state-of-the-art technical and organisational infrastructure for the tracking of public communication on Facebook and Twitter to facilitate analysis of how public communication takes place around issues and debates of high importance to our society.

Dr Anthony McCosker will present a discussion on rethinking digital citizenship and social media conflict, reflecting his forthcoming publication in the journal Convergence, 'Trolling as Provocation: YouTube's Agonistic Publics', (forthcoming 2014).

Suneel Jethani from Melbourne University will present on his research which critically examines the use of networked digital technologies in mediating human physiological processes, daily routines and behaviours as a means of generating personal agency and self-betterment. He will pose a number of critical questions in relation to technology, power, the body and media studies.

You are welcome to come for part or all of the day - lunch and refreshments are provided. Please find our conference poster attached for details of the day.
