considering the dominant and counter-narratives of parenting in a digital age

Much of the research on digital and mobile media in contemporary family life has focused on upper income families in the Western world.  Yet in a time of increasing economic disparity, what might be observed about the ways in which privileged and less advantaged families differently experience and incorporate these media into their family lives?  Drawing upon in-depth interview and observation research, this presentation synthesizes theories of domestication and the moral economy of the household with recent work in feminist cultural sociology.  The presentation aims to bring up a discussion regarding the dominant focus on children as a “project” for which technologies serve as handmaiden or distraction.  Counter-narratives to this approach will be explored and considered for their liberating potential.

Lynn Schofield Clark is Professor in the Department of Media, Film, and Journalism Studies and Director of the Estlow International Center for Journalism and New Media at the University of Denver.  Clark’s research focuses on how the everyday uses of media shape peoples’ experiences of their social identities in the context of widening income inequality in the U.S. She is author of The Parent App: Understanding Families in a Digital Age (Oxford U P 2012), From Angels to Aliens: Teenagers, the Media, and the Supernatural (OUP 2005) and coauthor of Media, Home and Family (Routledge 2004). In 2014, she is serving as a Visiting Fellow with the Digital Ethnography Research Center at RMIT, and as Visiting Professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.
