On February 25, 2014 the Research Unit in Public Cultures in the Faculty of Arts and the Centre for Cultural Partnerships in the Faculty of the VCA and MCM at the University of Melbourne are hosting a lecture entitled ‘Back to basics: Cultural value and arts policy’s fundamental questions’, presented by Dr Eleonora Belfiore.

The lecture will offer a critical review of the evolution of the debate around ‘cultural value’ as it has developed over the past 15 years. It will trace its emergence during the New Labour era as a frustrated response to the perceived instrumentalisation of the arts within cultural policy, and the resulting problem of impact measurement and evaluation in the context of an official commitment to policy making.

Dr Eleonora Belfiore is an Associate Professor of Cultural Policy in the Centre for Cultural Policy Studies at the University of Warwick. She is founder and curator of The #culturalvalue Initiative and also the Director of Studies on the Warwick Commission on the Future of Cultural Value.
